Real Help For Anxiety It seems to me that all of the advertising for anxiety reducing drugs that we see in so many places lately is a bit of a dilemma. While it is extremely helpful to have this very real and destructive disorder more accepted and in the public eye, these ads try to make anxiety almost a normal little thing that just a simple pill can take care of. I find it disturbing that anxiety disorders seem to be growing into an almost "social thing", with these drugs becoming more commonplace. There is often very little regard shown for the true health and well-being of people who really need a permanent and life-enhancing answer, not just another drug in the stew. Feelings of apprehension, worry, uneasiness or dread that never really go away, take the joy out of everything. Help must be found for the millions of people whose lives are affected by some type of anxiety disorder. But, just dulling these reactions without exploring their cause is like turning off the smoke alarm without looking for the fire. It seems to me that most anxiety disorders involve the brains inappropriate release of the body's own natural fight-or-flight chemicals such as cortisol or adrenaline. This is becoming the accepted theory in medical research. This response, which has evolved over eons to help people escape from danger, is necessary at the proper time. Everyone has experienced the pounding heart, tight muscles, racing mind and other effects that a real emergency brings. But what if this response is being triggered at the wrong time? Or all of the time? A basic component of anxiety is the neurological system signaling "emergency mode" to the body at inappropriate times. This constant imbalance wears at the body and mind, leaving anxiety sufferers exhausted and overwhelmed, feeling out of control. This is the environment in which disease and injury flourish. It seems to me that instead of drug therapy that doesn't solve the problem, and can bring problems of its own, that a holistic therapy that works to re-time the neurological system to break this destructive pattern would be a better approach. This method of treatment puts the body back into balance and coordinates the workings of all of the systems of your body. You feel relaxed and in control. |
