Are You Due For An Oil Change?

It seems to me that most people take better care of their cars than they do of their own bodies. As I was waiting for the oil to be changed in my car the other day, I was struck by the fact that we accept the concept of the importance of regular maintenance and only using quality fuel and additives for our cars, but do not apply these same principles to ourselves. We know that a properly maintained engine will outlast a neglected one dramatically, rotated tires last longer, and if you wear through your brake pads, you'll damage your wheel drums. But, for our own bodies we accept only repair work after the damage has been done. We routinely accept the notion that we will break down and require drugs and surgery to fix us without even thinking to ask what could have prevented it from happening.

It seems to me that with all of the controversy in our country about medical care and its astronomical cost to us all, that this aspect of the issue should be a primary focus. The treatment most often utilized in our nation is what could be termed "disease-care". It is primarily aimed at the elimination of the symptoms of disease or dysfunction, without addressing their cause. Just taking drugs to alter the body's response to a problem does not solve the problem. The underlying cause of the problem is still there, and will only manifest in other, possibly more serious, ways. Would you forever keep adding more oil to your car without finding out why it's leaking?

Holistic healthcare is the better answer that many people are looking for, a way to treat the causes of discomfort and find permanent good health. It is a system that deals with the causes of poor health, rather than just the symptoms of disease, that can be utilized in an integrated fashion along with your present medical care. If you think you should feel better than you do, chances are you're right.
